Day 3 – Saturday, 29th September
Michael, a friend from the other side of the city came to
visit. Michael
runs his own tourist shop and as a present brought me a lovely necklace and
traditional flip-flops made out of old
tyres and the straps are fixed with nails…why can’t we think of reusing old
things like that rather than spending lots of money on buying everything new?
Day 4 – Sunday, 30th September

Michael is heading back home so after seeing him off I spend
the rest of the day at a local bar which is famous for their pork.
You go up to the kitchen and select the
specific bit of pork and exactly how much you want and the cook will prepare it
for you. With your pork you will get a little salad (peppers, tomatoes,
cucumber) a mountain of salt, either Chilli Sauce or Ketchup and sometimes
even grilled bananas. Just before your food is being served a staff member (either
‘dada ‘ – sister or ‘kaka’ – brother) will come to your table with a bowl and a jug
of water in order for you to wash your hand (right hand only! You never eat
with your left hand as it is considered to be the dirty hand).
Once only the bones of the meat are left over
the ‘dada’ or ‘kaka’ will come over again so you can once again wash your hand!
It’s such a good idea, we should do this at home too!
At the end of the day it’s time to go home and to pack again as I am off
for a week’s holiday in Zanzibar. I will meet my friend Sarah from work
at the airport in Zanzibar. She has spent the last week successfully
climbing
mount Kilimanjaro near Arusha and Moshi in northern Tanzania…she
definitely
deserves a few days off and someone will have to keep her company!
